I have done specialist training in the use of acupuncture for pregnancy and childbirth. My work as the acupuncturist for the internationally renowned Active Birth Centre has given me considerable experience in treating all the common problems of pregnancy including induction and breech babies. In all of my treatments the safety of the mother and baby is paramount because pregnancy and birth are not without their risks. Unfortunately I have become increasingly aware that some complementary medicine consultants can neglect their responsibility in this area.

Acupuncture can help avoid the following and related problems which can be effectively treated.

Pre-conceptual
Stress, exhaustion

Antenatal
Nausea/morning sickness, oedema, migraine, insomnia, backache, sciatica, haemorrhoids, constipation, rashes, carpal tunnel, high blood pressure, vulval varicosity, tiredness

Labour
Preparation, breech presentation, induction, pain relief. Demonstration and practice of helpful massage for labour shown to birth partner

Postnatal care
Abdominal pain, fever, night sweats, depression, insufficient lactation, mastitis, engorged breasts, prolapse, back pain, body aches

Dietary advice, aromatherapy and reflexology are incorporated as required.

Testimonials
‘I was desperate with nausea from five weeks pregnant with both my pregnancies. It is so debilitating to feel so sick all the time. Maeve treated me both times and it helped keep me going as a lawyer with a heavy caseload.’

‘Treatment brought me immense relief from a back problem which other methods had failed to do. There were no side effects and no problems associated with treatment. As a midwife, I would highly recommend acupuncture.’

‘After the birth of my son I was in shock because of the rapidity of the birth. Maeve rebalanced my system physically and was a tremendous support mentally and emotionally and has remained so for all the years she has been treating my family.’

Acupuncture can restore and maintain health and well-being prior to conception, during pregnancy and after birth.

In experienced hands acupuncture is a safe, drug free alternative for the effective relief of many of the common problems associated with pregnancy. Not all acupuncture points should be used during pregnancy, therefore it is important to see an acupuncturist who is with a registered body e.g. the British Acupuncture Council.
